Class Two - Searching U. S. Censuses 

1. About U.S. Federal Censuses

  1. Compare census searches in ACOM and Heritage Quest (HQ), especially 1830, 1840, and 1850.

HQ - 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890(fragment), 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 (partial).

Note:  Use the Browse feature in HQ to search 1830, 1840, 1850.

 

HQ - Searches for exact spelling only. Compare a search for William Temple in the 1860 Census.

 

HQ - See Why didn't I find someone in the Census?

ACOM - 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890(fragment), 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930

ACOM - Returns alternate spellings and abbreviations

ACOM Wildcards:

    * represents zero or more characters. Must have two non-wildcard characters.

    ? represents a single character

   2. 1890 Census was damaged by fire. Only records from 18 specific counties in 11 states survived.

   3. Each census does not capture the same information. See handout

   4. The 1940 Census will be available in April 2012. The release(s) of searchable database(s) will come later.

   5. The 1930 Census will be completed in HQ after digitizing of a specific set of genealogy/history books are complete.

How can we get the 1850 Census from Heritage Quest?

Some years in HQ have not been name indexed.

To see the census for years that are not yet name-indexed, select  the Browse Census  from the toolbar to  search for information about ancestors or relatives in census data.  

Browse Census allows you to access all census years by locality. Browse Census contains four available options by which to narrow your search results; 1) Select Census Year;  2) Select Census State;  3) Select County;  4)Select Location.
